Pilgrimage into Japan’s spiritual origins
Gesthouse Mori Nonaka (in the Forest)

A pilgrimage to Kumano is a journey into Japanese spiritual origin. Buddhism prayers for peace, nature worship of Shintoism for sustainable life.
In the world under the influence of wars, the value of Kumano is re-evaluated. Since ancient times Kumanokodo has been the walking of healing in the quiet steep mountain path, purifying our soles. And we have been given spiritual energy for rebirth, rivive by beautiful mountains, forests, rivers, waterfalls, and rocks, which are worshipped as “Kami” (Shintoism dieties in Japan).
Guesthouse Mori Nonaka (in the Forest)

Nonaka is the first or second night’s lodging from the start point of the Kumanokodo Nakahechi route (Takijiri).
We were attracted by the beauty of the nature, quietness, and the warmth of the people in Kumano, and moved to next village Chikatsuyu 7 years ago.
We reformed an eighty years old folk house in a quiet forest in Kumano. Mori Nonaka means “in the forest”.
It’s 8 minutes walk down from Tsugizakura-oji shrine to this guesthouse. On your way, you can refresh with spring water of Nonaka no Shimizu (spring), and you’ll feel peaceful watching Buddhism statues in a small temple.
We serve our guests Japanese meals made from fresh local ingredients. We talk about the culture and history of Kumano and the joy of Kumanokodo pilgrimage.
We hope our guests to enjoy talking with us and other guests, rest well in our quiet home and then start the long walk to Kumano Hong Grand Shrine the next morning.
